Our civilization is obsess by the technological development. From our cellular phones to our food, the merchandise has to be more attractive and more efficient from year to year. The progress is going fast but some discoveries are raising moral debates in our society. GMF is one of these. Engineers in genetic worked hard in the past years to improve plants productivity and resistance. Even though, some people think this product could be dangerous for our health and our environment, so we should forbid its commercialization. Are advantages of GM foods greater than the disadvantages? I am sure than GMF is an excellent advancement.
First of all, genetically modified crops can help to solve our food shortage problem. All around the world, about 30% of children living in developing countries are suffering of malnutrition.[1] Our production problem will increase in the next years if you don’t find effective and quick answers. GMF could be one of these because we already developed this technology and we proved its value. Some modified plants have a superior yield. In fact, we could save money and feed population in need. Moreover, they created some plants that are resistant to insects. This could save hundreds of people in Africa who die each year because of the famine created by grasshopper invasion. This benefit is the most important because it is one of the solutions to resolve the hunger problem.
Second, GMF can cure important diseases. For example, more than 700 millions of people are suffering of iodine deficiency. This trouble than we don’t really know in Canada and that we underestimate causes goiter. With modified food, we could stop this crisis by adding iodine to rice and other usual product and save lives. They already tried this kind of improvement with Vitamin A. In countries like Botswana, people were getting blind because they had a poor diet in beta-carotene so the injected some in rice and helped thousands of people.[2] Imagine how many lives we can save with GMF now? Will it be the next method the do preventive medical treatments? The power of this technology is important and it could also be beneficial for Canadian. Our population as a lot of problem with cancer, but adding antioxidant to common food like potatoes could be a way out to reduce this difficulty.
To summarize up, the advantages of GMF are superior to the disadvantages. Even though it will not solve all our problems, it can be helpful to reduce hunger in emerging countries. Furthermore, it is a new approach to cure and prevent diseases. Every new technology has defects, but we should think twice at all its benefices before forbidding it.
